My Journey in Box Lacrosse

From field lacrosse player at a small club to international box lacrosse competitor - my journey spans over a decade of Dutch lacrosse development.

The Beginning (2013-2017)

Started with field lacrosse in 2013 with Wageningen Warriors, joining in the association’s first year. During this time I:

  • Served on the 6th board in 2015/2016
  • Participated in committees including the first lustrum committee
  • Continued as trainer from 2020-2024 after MSc graduation

Transition to Box Lacrosse (2017)

When box lacrosse started in the Netherlands around 2017, I made the transition to this faster, more physical indoor variant of the sport.

International Achievements

๐Ÿ† World Championships

  • 2019 - Langley, Canada: World Lacrosse Men’s Box Championship
  • 2024 - Utica, USA: World Lacrosse Men’s Box Championship

๐Ÿฅ‡ European Championships

  • 2022 - Hannover, Germany: European Box Lacrosse Championship

What is Box Lacrosse?

Box lacrosse is a variation of traditional field lacrosse, originating in North America. Key differences include:

๐ŸŸ๏ธ The Playing Surface

  • Played indoors on a smaller enclosed surface known as the “box”
  • Hockey rink-sized arena with boards and glass
  • 6 players per team (vs. 10 in field lacrosse)

โšก Game Style

  • Fast-paced with rapid transitions
  • More physical contact permitted
  • Shot clock creates constant action
  • Goalkeepers wear hockey-style padding

๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฑ Netherlands Development The Dutch men’s team has been steadily developing since the sport’s introduction, competing at the highest international levels and building a strong domestic league.

Personal Impact

Being part of Team Netherlands represents:

  • International competition at the highest level
  • Contributing to sport development in the Netherlands
  • 11+ years of competitive lacrosse experience

“Box lacrosse taught me that the fastest way between two points isn’t always a straight line - sometimes you need to bounce off the boards to find your path.”
